The Angel

For centuries The Angel has been a focal point of the village of Purton - and not just because its customers have always been guaranteed a cosy welcome there. The present building dates from 1704 and an inn probably stood on the same spot even before then. At one time the landlord brewed his own beer and it must have been made on a grand scale if we are to believe a local legend that 6,000 gallons of it were sold during one 18th century Purton fair. What is certain is that Purton folk considered The Angel to be far more ...

The Borough Arms

If the Borough Arms could be described as one of those little 'gems' which are becoming increasingly difficult to find up and down Britain's High Streets, then it is an appropriate description indeed. At one stage the premises saw an unlikely combination of an inn and a jeweller's shop! Parts of the Borough Arms are as old as almost any other Arkell's pub because the deeds to the building go back to 1661, though at that time it appears to have been a private house.

The Fox and Hounds

Arkell's has two pubs in Wroughton and they stand at opposite ends of the village. The Fox and and Hounds is the one at the top of the hill running out of the High Street, where it nestles into the hillside and seems to crouch down below the level of its front garden. It was let to Arkell's in the early 1870s but the freehold wasn't acquired until 1879. - En-suite accommodation - Close to Wroughton Science Museum - Lunchtime and evening menu - Children's play area

The Fox Inn

One of the first things that visitors from Swindon see when they arrive in Highworth is The Fox Inn. Those who are tempted to stop and sample the beer and the traditional pub food will find a down-to-earth, modest pub with a ready welcome. - Forge restaurant - Sunday Lunch a speciality - Plentiful free parking The Fox has been dispensing beer since 1840 and it has been Arkell's beer since 1862 after its owners, a banking firm from Faringdon, went bankrupt.

The Three Tuns

Don't be fooled by The Three Tuns' somewhat unassuming image. Down-to-earth it may be, but inside there is a cracking pub waiting to get out. - Big screen sports - Function room with own bar - Children's play area with bouncy castle (April to Oct only) Today it looks out over a busy mini roundabout on the main road into Wroughton from Swindon but the island used to house a war memorial and before that - indeed, before the motor car - it was grassed with an elm tree in the centre. For years there was a weighbridge outside ...

The Old Bear

Cricklade's motto is "In loco delicioso" ("In a delightful place") and its wide High Street is a pleasant centrepiece. No two buildings are the same, yet still The Old Bear manages to stand out, looking for all the world like an old-fashioned cottage which the owners have suddenly decided to throw open to drinkers and hotel guests. In fact, The Old Bear has a longer history than most pubs in the area. The earliest building on the site was occupied in 1697 and by 1786 it was trading as The Saracen's Head. The name later changed to The Bear and at ...
